Eva Mae's Daughter, Andrea, Goes Home

Dear Friends,
It was the beginning of January when I wrote to you last, and I was wishing each of you God's blessings for the New Year. Little did I know that within days of writing that letter to you, my own life would be changed forever.

My daughter, Andrea, celebrated her 62nd birthday on January 18, 2001. In the next few days, she began to feel ill, with shortness of breath and blackouts occurring. She went to the doctor, but he could not immediately diagnose her problem. Andrea had suffered with Crohn's disease for several years and thought this might be a related illness.  The doctor scheduled a hospital visit for Monday, January 29,2001, so tests could be performed.

In the meantime,Andrea was feeling so weak that she came to my home to stay with me. On Sunday afternoon, January 28, Andrea collapsed on my bed and blacked out. I quickly called 911, and she was rushed to the hospital across the street from my home. She was pronounced dead from cardiac arrest. The Lord had taken my precious baby girl home to heaven.
Friends, I cannot tell you how shocked and saddened I was. After only a week's illness, my dear child was gone. We were so close to each other, and I still can't believe it. We would talk with each other on the phone every single day, and usually we would also see each other daily, often going to eat with each other. Many of you already know that I had already lost my eldest son, Pierce, in a plane crash in 1985., and I didn't think I could bear up after losing two children. Deeps in my heart, though, I knew that God would give me the strength and courage to carry on; and He has, one day at a time.
While I was grieving over the loss of my daughter, another loss occurred. On March 7, my dear stepmother, Martha Whittington, died of a stroke. Again, this was totally unexpected, since Martha had not been ill nor had any health problems. The Lord called her home as she arose that morning to begin her day. She had taken wonderful care of my 102-year-old daddy for so many years , and she was such a precious and kind person. Oh, how I miss her!
Now Daddy was all alone in his home; so being his only child living in Atlanta, I packed my suitcase and moved into his home to look after him. My daddy is very independent and insisted on remaining in his home rather than moving into a nursing home or any other such place.
As you can see, the last couple of months have been very challenging for me, and my load has been very heavy. It's difficult enough for an 83 year old woman to take care of herself, let alone look after her 102 year old father. Thank goodness, my sister, Pearl, who lives in Nashville, has been staying with daddy, also, and that has allowed me to get some much needed rest. I want to thank each of you who has sent letters, flowers and cards of sympathy and encouragement. In addition to your prayers, those things have helped sustain me during these difficult days. I would ask that you continue to remember my family in your prayers.
Your Friend In Jesus,
